ALS Newsletter First Issue

Welcome to the first issue of the Academy of Leisure Sciences Newsletter. We anticipate publishing the newsletter biannually in March and September. Feel free to send me ideas, text, and information about upcoming events. The ALS Newsletter will grow as the organization grows.

Geoffrey Godbey has been appointed Sir Yue-Kong Pao Visiting Professor

Geoffrey Godbey has been appointed Sir Yue-Kong Pao Visiting Professor, Asia Pacific Centre for the Study and Training of Leisure, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. As such, he will spend a total of six months over the next three years teaching, working with graduate students and collaborating on research projects with graduate students and faculty from the centre. Election Results -- Academy of Leisure Sciences

It is my pleasure to announce results of the recent election of the Academy of Leisure Sciences. Deb Jordan, Bill Stewart, and Ingrid Schneider were unanimously elected as President Elect, Treasurer, and Secretary respectively. Our current President Elect, Alan Ewert, will take over as President later this year.

2012 Future Scholars Selected

Three outstanding graduate students were elected as 2012 Future Scholars.

Hua Bai (University of Missouri, supported by Sonja Wilhelm Stanis). She is interested in people’s use of parks and how parks contribute to healthy lifestyles and wellbeing.

Gareth Jones (Temple University, supported by Brianna Clark). He is interested in how participation in sport, recreation, and leisure contribute to social, physical, and psychological development and leadership skills among youth. Read more about 2012 Future Scholars Selected

2012 Election of Fellows

Five outstanding colleagues were elected as Fellows to the Academy of Leisure Sciences in May of 2012. They are Jim Busser (University of Nevada, Las Vegas), Sherry Dupuis (University of Waterloo), Heather Gibson (University of Florida), Bob Rossman (Professor and Dean Emeritus, Illinois State University), and Bryan Smale (University of Waterloo).

These newly elected Fellows will be welcomed at our annual luncheon and business meeting in Anaheim, CA. FYI, the date of that meeting is Thursday, October 18. Details will be forthcoming. Read more about 2012 Election of Fellows

An Invitation to Join the Academy of Leisure Sciences

The Academy of Leisure Sciences (ALS) is dedicated to the advancement of leisure studies. The primary purpose of the ALS is to bring together people from diverse backgrounds, academic and otherwise, who share a mutual interest in better understanding the roles of leisure in life, including various contexts of recreation, park, tourism, outdoor adventure, health, and therapy, and sport. Kleiber Receives Basque Fellowship

Douglas Kleiber (Professor, University of Georgia) received a fellowship from the Basque Science Foundation to conduct research in the Institute of Leisure Studies at Deusto University, Bilbao, Spain, from June – December 2011. Kleiber will investigate factors associated with engagement and well-being in later life. His objective is to inform educational and social policy decisions, and to identify implications for leisure interventions. Read more about Kleiber Receives Basque Fellowship
